Sydney bassist-composer Jonathan Zwartz has been one of Australia’s most respected bassists for many years, having enhanced the music of other bandleaders including Bernie McGann, Bobby Gebert, Mike Nock, James Morrison, Vince Jones, Barney McAll and Jex Saarelaht. He released his first album as bandleader, The Sea, in 2010, to widespread acclaim.
His second album of original music, The Remembering & Forgetting Of The Air, was released earlier this year. It features a remarkable array of talent, most of them long-standing colleagues of Jonathan’s : Phil Slater (trumpet), Julien Wilson and Richard Maegraith (saxophones), James Greening (trombone), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Barney McAll (piano), Hamish Stuart (drums) and Fabian Hevia (percussion).
Jonathan says, “Words can’t really express how wonderfully these musicians play together, always listening, always sympathetic to the music and the idea of ensemble improvisation within the style of the pieces. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for me to be able to present the music from this album with the original band from the recording. We have not been all together in one place since the album was recorded in November 2011.”
“This is a stunningly beautiful album, full of warmth, with touches of Ellington and Mingus, of soul and pop, and featuring a stellar cast of musicians.” – australianjazz.net
